Have you ever found yourself getting lost in the beauty of what I call a "Story Song"? I'm sure there is a formal name for this type of song - a song that tells a great story about someone getting shot or divorced. Call it what you will, I am in love with them. Furthermore, I find myself delving into artists I normally wouldn't when it comes to story songs.
My Top Three:
- Highway Patrolman - Bruce Springsteen
- Carolina Drama - The Raconteurs
- Blackjack Davey - Bob Dylan
But you don't like country music?
ReplyDeleteJohnny Cash - A Boy Named Sue
ReplyDeleteKenny Rogers - Coward of the County
Simon & Garfunkle - Save the Life of my Child
Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Cradle
The Beatles - Rocky Raccoon
Gordon Lightfoot - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Suzanne Vega - My Name is Luka
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
Josh Ritter - The Curse
Man, great songs gang...really enjoyed some dudes acoustic version of Black Jack Davey (supposed to be Dylan, but it was just some dude...really good though!) I'm gonna post one of my favorite songs that isn't a story song, but written by a singer-songwriter in a bit.
ReplyDeleteTime in a Bottle - Jim Croce
The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
Homeward Bound - Simon & Garfunkel
Fire and Rain - James Taylor
Old Man - Neil Young
Just about any Johnny Cash song (I've Got Stripes, One Piece at a Time, Five Feet High and Rising)
Sloop John B - Beach Boys
Oh, and Jerry Was A Race Car Driver - Primus
